NIO’s Onvo Brand Becomes First in China to Start Self-Driving Inside Residential Compounds

For every Chinese ADAS user who has rolled their eyes at the daily ritual of manually piloting a car out of an underground garage, through the gated compound and onto the public road before any “city pilot” mode can engage, June 18, 2026 was a quiet milestone. NIO’s Onvo sub-brand pushed an OTA for its Coconut+ ADAS package that adds a new park-to-park navigation mode that begins inside a residential or office compound — covering the underground ramp, the internal road network, the gate handshake and the merge onto the public road. NIO claims it is the first production Chinese ADAS to commercialize the scenario; rivals from Huawei ADS, Li Auto Livis and XPeng XNGP currently hand the keys back to the driver until the car is on a public road.

How the Compound-Memory Map Was Built

The mode rides on top of NIO’s Aquila Vision 2.0 end-to-end perception model, retrained over Q1-Q2 2026 on a fleet-collected corpus of more than 14,000 individual residential and office compounds in 28 Chinese cities. Coverage is densest today in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Chengdu, with 21 additional cities targeted by Q4 2026. For compounds outside the corpus, the system needs roughly two manual drives to “memorize” the internal road network, the gate location and any speed-bump or turning-radius constraints. Once mapped, the car will self-drive up the ramp, navigate the internal roads, negotiate the gate (slow-down plus RFID handshake or a human-confirm fallback if RFID is absent), and merge onto the public road before continuing with normal city or expressway Navigate-on-ADAS.

Hardware Required, Edge Cases Acknowledged

Compound-start mode is restricted to Coconut+ trims (mid-trim and above) equipped with the front-facing 800 TOPS NVIDIA Orin-X compute, the Aquila Vision sensor stack, and the high-resolution rear-axle electric power steering used to feather sharp turns. NIO has been unusually transparent about edge cases: the system falls back to manual control if the gate guard is non-RFID and does not respond within 8 seconds, if a person, child or pet is detected within 1.2 meters of the path, if heavy rain, snow or fog reduce camera visibility below threshold, or if the compound is not in NIO’s corpus.

How It Stacks Against Li Auto, Huawei and XPeng

Every major Chinese ADAS player is racing toward this scenario. Li Auto’s September 2026 OTA introduces full-scenario reverse-parking and underground-garage exits but stops short of negotiating compound gates. Huawei ADS 5.0 supports valet-out for partner-mapped malls and corporate parks but is less aggressive on residential compounds. XPeng XNGP currently maps valet-parking exits, not compound exits. Onvo getting there first reframes the brand from a value-play sub-NIO into a software-cadence story, with battery swap as the structural differentiator.
