BYD’s Mid-Size Sedan Play Gets a Lot More Aggressive
BYD is filling a deliberate gap in its lineup, and the implications for China’s mid-size sedan market are significant. Leaked dealer pre-sale documents reveal that the upcoming Qin MAX will span nine configurations priced between RMB 115,000 and RMB 155,000 (approximately USD 15,862 to USD 21,379), with both plug-in hybrid DM-i and battery-electric variants. The official launch date is set for August 13, 2026.
Positioning Between the Qin L and the Han
The Qin MAX slots into a precise market gap. The current Qin L starts at approximately RMB 99,800 in the compact segment, while the Han series begins at RMB 209,800 targeting large sedans. At an estimated length of 4,800 mm with a 2,790 mm wheelbase, the Qin MAX targets the mid-size category — the same segment occupied by the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Tesla Model 3 in China. BYD’s pricing undercuts all of these rivals by a substantial margin, leveraging vertical integration in battery production and power electronics to maintain margins even at aggressive price points.
The DM-i variants will use BYD’s fourth-generation super-hybrid system with a 1.5-liter engine (74 kW), electric motor (145 kW), and Blade Battery, delivering an estimated combined range exceeding 1,200 km. The BEV models offer CLTC ranges of 450 km, 510 km, and 560 km with a single rear motor producing approximately 150 kW.
Technology Trickle-Down to the Mass Market
Perhaps the most noteworthy development is the optional “God’s Eye B” ADAS package, which includes a single LiDAR sensor and enhanced urban navigation capabilities. Having LiDAR-equipped driver assistance available below RMB 150,000 represents a significant shift — this technology was reserved for premium models just 18 months ago. The Qin MAX is expected to feature BYD’s latest DiLink infotainment with a 15.6-inch rotating display, DiPilot Level 2 assistance, and V2L external power discharge up to 6 kW.
