BYD Enters Shooting Brake Territory with Fangchengbao SGT — 850 km on a Single Charge

Chinese automakers have conquered sedans, SUVs and hatchbacks. Now BYD is pushing into one of the most niche segments in the automotive world: the shooting brake. The Fangchengbao SGT, filed in China’s 32nd MIIT tax exemption catalog, will be BYD Group’s first electric shooting brake — and with up to 850 km CLTC range, it could also be the longest-range vehicle in this body style at any price point.

A 92 kWh Blade Battery Behind Four-Second Sprint Times

The SGT rides on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo and packs a 92.093 kWh Blade Battery (LFP chemistry). Three range configurations are available depending on drivetrain and wheel choice: 730 km in dual-motor AWD guise, 800 km for the single-motor RWD with larger wheels, and the headline 850 km figure for the efficiency-optimized RWD variant.

The dual-motor setup pairs a 230 kW rear motor with a 150 kW front unit for an estimated 380 kW combined output and a sub-4.0-second 0-100 km/h time. Crucially, BYD’s cell-to-pack integration keeps the 92 kWh pack within the shooting brake’s low floor, preserving both cabin height and cargo volume — a packaging challenge that has plagued competitors trying to combine large batteries with sporty silhouettes.

Why Shooting Brake, Why Now?

The shooting brake form factor — a coupe roofline extended into a cargo area — has historically been reserved for European nameplates like the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo and Ferrari GTC4Lusso. Fangchengbao’s move signals that Chinese premium brands are now confident enough to enter segments defined by design emotion rather than pure utility.

Positioned between the Bao 5 off-road SUV and the upcoming Bao 8 flagship, the SGT targets urban professionals who want sports-car aesthetics without sacrificing practicality. At an estimated RMB 280,000-350,000 (USD 38,600-48,300), it undercuts the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo by more than half while delivering 300 km more range.
