MG 4X EV Launches in China at RMB 92,800: Compact Electric SUV with 610 km Range and Semi-Solid-State Battery

by codydbadmin · May 27, 2026

On May 27, 2026, SAIC’s MG brand officially launched the new MG 4X — a compact pure-electric SUV that builds on the MG 4 hatchback’s reputation as one of China’s best-selling export EVs. With four trims spanning two battery sizes and two ADAS hardware tiers, the 4X targets the high-volume sub-RMB 120,000 family EV market.

The MG 4X is built on SAIC’s Star Nebula pure-electric architecture, uses a rear-mounted motor, and is one of the few sub-RMB 100,000 EVs to feature a semi-solid-state battery option — a technology MG plans to highlight in its export marketing.

Exterior Design

The MG 4X continues the MG 4 family’s design language with a closed-off EV-specific front fascia, a horizontal full-width LED daytime running light bar and an illuminated MG badge. Aggressive lower body cladding and a front “wind blade” treatment improve aerodynamics.

The side profile is clean and unbroken, with black wheel-arch and rocker trim contrasting the body color. MG chose conventional pull-out door handles rather than the now-common flush handles — likely a cost decision. Dimensions are 4,500 × 1,849 × 1,621 mm (1,627 mm with roof rails) and the wheelbase is 2,735 mm.

The rear gets a Sirius Y-shaped full-width LED light bar and an inset lower tailgate that visually lifts the back end.

Interior and Cockpit Tech

Inside, the 4X uses a wrap-around dashboard with a flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel and column-mounted electronic gear shifter. The entry trim gets a 10.25-inch digital cluster + 15.6-inch floating center display. The infotainment runs an in-house OS with ByteDance Doubao large-language model integration, supports four-zone voice control, and works with CarPlay, HiCar and Carlink — plus OPPO’s smart connectivity ecosystem for multi-device pairing.

Material quality is unusually high for the segment: 86% of interior surfaces use soft-touch materials. Color choices include Yacht Blue and Starry Purple.

Standard equipment on the base trim includes powered driver and passenger seats with heating and ventilation, six airbags, an integrated dashcam, and an 8-speaker audio system. Higher trims add 256-color ambient lighting, seat massage, a powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, 50 W wireless phone charging, and even a power-leg-rest “queen” front passenger seat on the top model.

Driver Assistance: Two Tiers

The MG 4X offers two ADAS configurations:

  • Freedom (entry): Horizon Robotics J3 chip, 5 cameras and 8 ultrasonic sensors. Supports L2 ACC, lane-keeping and lane-centering.
  • Smart (premium): Horizon Robotics J6E chip, 6 cameras, 12 ultrasonics and 3 millimeter-wave radars — 21 sensors total. Supports L2+ features including highway NOA, full-scene smart parking and a sentry mode.

This gives MG one of the cleanest good/better ADAS distinctions in the price band, and the Horizon J6E chip puts the top trim on par with cars priced 50% higher.

Powertrain and Battery

The MG 4X is rear-wheel drive with two motor outputs: 150 kW (510 km trims) and 125 kW (610 km trims). Battery options are:

RangeBatteryChemistry
510 km53.9 kWhLFP (lithium iron phosphate)
610 km64.2 kWhSemi-solid-state (manganese-based lithium-ion)

The semi-solid-state battery is the headline tech here — a step toward full solid-state batteries — offering higher energy density and improved thermal safety versus standard LFP. Combined with the five-link independent rear suspension (rare at this price), the 4X drives more like a small premium EV than a budget commuter.

Why It Matters

MG has built its EV reputation in Europe on the original MG 4 hatchback (sold there as a runaway export hit). The 4X is a logical SUV-format follow-up — and the semi-solid-state battery option gives MG something concrete to differentiate in markets like the UK, Germany and Australia, where the BYD Atto 2 and the Dongfeng Box are crowding in. In China, the sub-RMB 100,000 promotional pricing is aggressive enough to seriously dent rivals like the BYD Yuan UP and Geely Galaxy Star 6.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the MG 4X cost?

Official pricing is RMB 99,800–116,800. With the launch promotion, prices drop to RMB 92,800–109,800 (~$12,800–$15,200).

What is the range of the MG 4X?

Two range options: 510 km CLTC with a 53.9 kWh LFP battery, or 610 km CLTC with a 64.2 kWh semi-solid-state battery.

Will the MG 4X be exported to Europe?

MG has not yet confirmed European pricing or launch dates, but the 4X is widely expected to be a key export model given the strong European reception of the MG 4 hatchback. Expect a European reveal later in 2026.

Is the semi-solid-state battery in the MG 4X a true solid-state battery?

No. It is a semi-solid-state cell that replaces part of the liquid electrolyte with a solid or gel-based electrolyte. It offers improved energy density and thermal safety compared to standard LFP, but is not a fully solid-state cell.
