Chinese automakers set fresh export records in July 2026 as BYD shipped 179,841 vehicles overseas and Chery became the first Chinese brand to surpass 200,000 monthly exports. Total NEV exports reached 2.355 million units in the first half, up 120 percent year on year, confirming overseas demand as the industry’s primary growth engine.

July Export Scoreboard
BYD’s July exports surged 124.3 percent year on year, accounting for roughly 43 percent of its 419,211 monthly wholesale volume. Notably, BYD’s domestic sales declined about 9 percent, making overseas markets the decisive growth driver. Chery exported 202,500 units in July, a 70.1 percent jump, and has now cleared 200,000 exports for five consecutive months. Geely also exceeded 100,000 overseas shipments for the second straight month.
The export mix has shifted upmarket. BYD’s Han, Tang and Seal, along with Xpeng, NIO and Zeekr models, now sell in Europe at 30,000–60,000 euros, bringing 800-volt platforms and advanced ADAS that match or beat European competitors.
From Exports to Local Production
Tariffs are accelerating a strategic pivot. Brazil imposed a 35 percent import duty on July 1, while EU countervailing duties of 17–35 percent remain in force. Chinese brands are responding with factories: BYD’s Bahia plant in Brazil produced its 100,000th vehicle in July, its Hungary facility is due in 2027, and Leapmotor is using Stellantis plants in Spain and Italy. GAC plans to break ground in Brazil in Q4 2026.

Southeast Asia and the Middle East are also bright spots. Chinese brands hold over 75 percent of Thailand’s EV market, while BYD, Changan, Geely and Great Wall Motors have opened regional hubs in Dubai and Riyadh. The weaker yuan, down about 6 percent against the dollar since early 2025, has further boosted price competitiveness.
The second half may see slower sequential growth as tariff headwinds and a high H1 base take effect. But the structural shift is clear: Chinese automakers are building local factories, workforces and dealer networks worldwide.
