Li Xiang Pushes Back on EV-vs-EREV Snobbery as Li Auto L8 BEV Heads to June 23 Launch

Li Auto founder and CEO Li Xiang spent June 17, 2026 doing two jobs at once. On Weibo and an internal all-hands livestream he confirmed that the brand’s first pure-electric L-series, the Li Auto L8 BEV, will go on sale on June 23, 2026 at a Beijing event, then used the same stage to tell the Chinese auto industry to stop policing how families plug in. The pre-launch package — including a real-world Beijing-Tianjin range run on the G6 expressway — frames the L8 BEV as a flagship product and a counter-argument to what Li called the rising “energy snobbery” (能源鄙视链) between BEV and EREV buyers.

The “No Energy Hierarchy” Speech

By mid-2026 China’s pure-EV penetration has crossed 50% of new-energy registrations, and a vocal slice of urban EV owners has begun mocking EREV buyers as “fake EVs.” Li’s rebuttal: roughly 40% of Chinese new-car buyers still drive ICE, and any technology that converts an ICE buyer to a lower-emissions vehicle is a win — whether that is BEV, EREV or PHEV. “Anyone laughing at EREV today was laughing at EVs five years ago,” he said. The strategic read: Li Auto will run a deliberate dual-track lineup, keeping the L-series EREV as the family default while letting the BEV variants and the i-series compete head-on with Tesla Model Y, NIO ET6, Xiaomi YU7 and Zeekr 7X.

L8 BEV Hardware Headlines

The BEV variant retains the EREV L8’s 5.08 m midsize-SUV footprint but swaps the 1.5-T range extender for an 800V silicon-carbide architecture borrowed from the Li MEGA and i-series. Provisional specs include a 97.8 kWh CATL ternary pack, 720 km CLTC range, 5C peak charging (10-80% in 11 minutes on a Li Auto pillar), 400 kW dual-motor AWD, 0-100 km/h in 3.9s, four LiDAR and dual NVIDIA Thor-X compute running the new Livis ADAS stack. June 17’s six-car G6 expressway demo averaged 15.6 kWh/100 km in 32°C heat, extrapolating to ~625 km of real-world range — about a 13% delta versus the CLTC headline.

Pricing and What It Signals

Li Auto has not confirmed pricing, but Cinda, CITIC and GF Securities currently model a 319,800-339,800 RMB ($44,100-$46,800) starting band, with an Ultra trim near 419,800 RMB. At that price a 720 km, 5C, four-LiDAR family SUV becomes a benchmark Tesla, Hyundai-Kia, Volvo and Audi will likely answer in their 2027 cycles.
