What’s New: Hyperscreen, Star Grille, Air Suspension

The visual signature of the new EQ GLC is the brand’s revived “shield” grille, executed here as an active light surface with 942 illuminated points that breathe on/off as a welcome animation. Inside the headlight clusters, the Mercedes logo lights up as part of the daytime running graphic. Headlights themselves use micro-LED technology for higher brightness and lower power, and the front end houses a 128 L frunk.

Inside, Mercedes has finally delivered a true Hyperscreen for the China-market mid-size SUV. The 39.1-inch seamless MBUX Hyperscreen runs across nearly the full dash and is powered by the new MB.OS, with a virtual cabin agent called “Little Benz” built on top of the Doubao LLM. The car adds a head-up display, a Burmester Performance surround system with Dolby Atmos, four-zone climate control, heated/ventilated/massaging front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel as standard on higher trims.

Atmosphere has been overhauled too: 10 dynamic wallpapers run synchronously with a 64-colour ambient light system, and the panoramic glass roof embeds 154 illuminated stars that play in time with the cabin lighting. The triple-silver-laminated panoramic roof is divided into nine independently dimmable zones supporting transparent, semi-transparent and pattern modes.

Powertrain and Chassis: 800V, AIRMATIC, Rear-Wheel Steering

Mercedes positions the top-spec five-seat “Gold Edition” as the technical flagship. It runs twin permanent-magnet motors in a 4MATIC AWD configuration, combined output 310 kW, drawing from an 85.5 kWh pack good for 680 km or 703 km of CLTC range depending on wheel and equipment choices. The 800V platform supports a claimed 22-minute 10%-to-80% DC fast-charge.

Chassis hardware borrows directly from the S-Class. The EQ GLC gets AIRMATIC air suspension with ADS+ adaptive damping, voice-controllable ride height, and intelligent height adjustment that reads map data to predict speed bumps and motorway entries. It also adds rear-wheel steering with up to 4.5° of articulation, sharpening low-speed manoeuvrability and high-speed lane changes alike. Together with the 3,027 mm wheelbase, these systems are designed to give the EQ GLC the cabin calm of a much larger car.

ADAS: Momenta NOA, City-to-Highway, “Park-to-Park” by Year-End

Driver assistance leans on a deep partnership with Momenta. At launch the EQ GLC supports city and highway navigation-on-autopilot, automated lane changes without map prompts, automatic stop/go at unmapped traffic lights, ETC tollway crossings and trace reversing. Mercedes commits to enabling “parking space to parking space” autonomous driving via OTA within the same calendar year.

Where It Sits — and What It’s Up Against

The most direct rival is the all-new BMW iX3, which also rides on a dedicated 800V architecture, uses Momenta software, introduces BMW’s Neue Klasse OS X and a horizon-level “Panoramic Vision” display, and claims more than 900 km of CLTC range. Both cars target Chinese families that previously cross-shopped Tesla Model Y and NIO ES6, but they sit a notch above in terms of luxury content. The EQ GLC’s sharper edge is interior finishing — particularly the Hyperscreen, the AIRMATIC chassis and the genuinely Chinese-optimised Doubao voice agent.

Final on-sale pricing is expected within weeks. If Mercedes can hold the pre-sale floor at RMB 349,000 once the official figure is announced, the EQ GLC will be the most aggressively priced battery-electric Mercedes SUV in China to date — and a serious counter-attack against both BMW and the local premium EV pack.
