Xiaomi’s second act in the automotive world arrives tonight. The SkyNomad (Pengcheng) series — a pair of extended-range electric SUVs built on the company’s all-new Kunlun architecture — makes its global debut on July 30 in Beijing. With 505 kilometers of pure-electric range and a starting price expected below 200,000 RMB, the SkyNomad is a direct shot at Li Auto’s dominance in China’s large EREV SUV market.
Two Sizes, One Breakthrough Platform
The launch includes the five-seat N70 Max (4,960 mm) and the seven-seat flagship N90 Max (5,285 mm with a 3,080 mm wheelbase). Both ride on Xiaomi’s first ground-up vehicle architecture — the Kunlun Platform — which integrates battery, fuel tank, rear electric drive, and suspension into a unified underbody, enabling a completely flat cabin floor.
The headline specification is a 76 kWh ternary lithium battery delivering 505 km of CLTC pure-electric range. That is nearly double the 30–45 kWh batteries typical of most EREVs on the market, effectively giving owners a full week of zero-emission urban commuting before the 1.5T range extender ever fires. Combined range exceeds 1,500 km, with WLTC feedstock fuel consumption rated at just 5.7 L/100 km.
Why Li Auto Should Be Nervous
Li Auto built its entire identity around the extended-range formula and has faced few serious challengers since 2019. The SkyNomad changes that calculus. By pairing an EREV powertrain with sedan-class electric range, Xiaomi blurs the line between the two technologies — and does so at a price point that undercuts Li Auto’s L7 and L8 by a meaningful margin.
Build quality is also being addressed up front: 2,200 MPa ultra-high-strength steel at 16 structural points, a continuous hot-stamped door ring across all four pillars, and 12 airbags as standard. Xiaomi is clearly aware that brand-new automotive entrants live and die on first-impression quality.
