One SUV Launch Shook China’s EV Order Board in July 2026

For the first time in years, a single Chinese EV brand has overtaken BYD on a weekly order basis. Xpeng’s newly launched Mona L03 SUV drove the company to 59,200 orders in the third week of July 2026, leapfrogging BYD’s combined Dynasty and Ocean brands (47,900), according to Goldman Sachs’ weekly retail tracker. The result underscores how aggressively the Chinese EV market can shift when pricing, technology, and timing align.

Aggressive Pricing Meets Standard Smart Features

The Mona L03 SUV went on sale in China on July 16 at 123,800 yuan — 20,000 yuan below its presale price. Every variant comes standard with Xpeng’s in-house Turing AI chip, bringing autonomous driving hardware previously reserved for premium models into the mass-market segment. Waiting times have already stretched to 13–17 weeks, and Deutsche Bank has raised its monthly sales forecast to around 15,000 units. The L03 is also Xpeng’s first global model, launching simultaneously in China and Europe across 64 overseas markets.

A Cannibalization Caveat

However, Deutsche Bank reports that the Mona M03 sedan — previously Xpeng’s best-selling model — has seen orders drop roughly 40% since the L03 SUV arrived. The two models overlap closely on price, suggesting Xpeng is trading one hit’s momentum for another rather than generating large amounts of net new demand. The key question is whether the L03 can attract enough conquest customers from rival brands to offset the M03 decline.

What the Weekly Tracker Shows

The Goldman Sachs data also provides context on the broader competitive landscape. Geely (Zeekr + Galaxy) recorded 20,900 weekly orders, Leapmotor 16,200, Li Auto 12,500, NIO 9,400, Tesla China 8,200, Xiaomi 7,400, and Huawei HiMA 7,050. While one week does not establish a trend — BYD’s monthly volumes remain roughly five times Xpeng’s — the milestone signals that a well-priced, tech-loaded vehicle can reshape market share almost overnight in China’s saturated EV market.
