Geely Galaxy Brand Heads to Europe in 2027: A Made-in-China Defender Rival Lines Up the UK, Norway and Germany

by codydbadmin · June 23, 2026

Geely’s mainstream-brand Galaxy line is heading to Europe. The first product through the door will be the Galaxy Starship — the rugged, range-extender off-road SUV first shown at Shanghai as the Galaxy Cruiser concept — confirmed for UK sale in the 2027–2028 window, with Norway, the Netherlands and Germany next. It is the first time the Galaxy brand itself, separate from Zeekr or Geely’s pure-EV nameplates, will be sold in Europe.

The Galaxy Starship: A Defender-Class Made-in-China Off-Roader

UK launch was confirmed publicly by Geely Auto UK marketing director Yan Tianxiao in conversations with Autocar, CarWow and CarSauce in January 2026 — the precise quote: “We will definitely launch that car in the UK.” The Starship sits on the same SEA-R platform that underpins the Zeekr 9X and an adapted version used in the Lotus Eletre PHEV. Powertrain is a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine acting as a generator, paired with three electric motors fed by a 70 kWh battery. Pure-electric range is around 350 km CLTC; WLTP is expected at 280–300 km once European homologation completes. Wading depth is 800 mm — directly competitive with the Land Rover Defender’s 900 mm.

UK First, Then Norway, Netherlands and Germany

Three reasons explain why Geely is leading with the UK. First, RHD priority — Geely already builds RHD Zeekr 9X variants for Australia and Hong Kong, so production-line cost of adding RHD Galaxy units is marginal. Second, the UK already accepts Chinese marques: MG, BYD, GWM and Chery have built recognition and dealer footprints. Third, EU tariff exposure: the UK is outside the European Commission’s countervailing-duty regime on Chinese EVs, which makes the per-unit landed cost meaningfully cleaner than launching directly into Germany or France.

Why It Matters for Made-in-China Auto Strategy

Galaxy entering Europe is significant because the marque sits in the mainstream-priced segment that the established European brands historically dominated. iEVChina’s full Galaxy Europe rollout map sequences three to four nameplates across the 2027–2029 window. If Made-in-China off-roaders can land at half the Defender’s price with a real production EREV powertrain, the competitive map in European SUV-land gets rewritten quickly.
